Because of the stress he snapped one day, while making a particularly fancy hat for the red queen he made a minor, and almost unnoticeable error, when the red queen came to retrive her headwear the Hatter was gone, and with him he took every hat in his shop. Carrolls Mad Hatter is in turn a reference to the tendency of Victorian era hatters to go mad 'as mad as a hatter' was even a common phrase at the time.
